Remington College is offering free back-to-school haircuts for students age 17 and under through its Cuts for Kids program. The benefit is twofold: parents can save some money on the cost of back-to-school preparations, and students in the Remington College Cosmetology Diploma program get real-world experience to enhance their education.
"Cuts for Kids is great for our cosmetology students, as it gives them hands-on experience working with actual clients. Our students love working with the kids and putting a smile on their face; and perhaps just as importantly, keeping their parents happy!," said lead cosmetology instructor Charles Woolbright via email.
Students aren't the only ones who can receive free services. Anyone who brings a donation of school supplies (like pens, pencils, notebooks, etc.) to the college can get a free haircut, manicure or pedicure. The donations will be given to local schools for students in need.
This is the eighth year the college has offered the program. Since then, 968 complimentary haircuts have been given. "We're excited about passing the 1,000 mark this year!," Woolbright said.
What styles are the cosmetology students expecting to hear requests for? "Most girls still want long hair, so we’ll do a lot of just trimming the ends rather than providing a new style. A lot of boys will ask for really short buzz cuts, some will want faux hawks, and some older boys want to keep their hair long with thick bangs and sides that go over the ears," Woolbright said.
The Cuts for Kids program is one of several ways the college gives back to the community. "At Remington College, giving back to our local community has always been an important part of our mission, whether it’s Cuts for Kids, our 3 Lives Blood Drives or our health fairs," Woolbright said.
The back-to-school Cuts for Kids promotion runs through the end of August. To schedule an appointment, call The Salon at Remington at 216-584-2490. Walk-ins are also welcome. The salon is open Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 6:30-8 p.m. (appointments only); Saturday 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. (appointments only).
