Remington offers free back-to-school haircuts

Remington College will once again offer free back-to-school haircuts this August during its eighth annual Cuts for Kids event.

Students in the Remington cosmetology program will be giving free haircuts to students 17 and younger. Additionally, any parent who brings in a donation of school supplies can get a free haircut, manicure or pedicure. The supplies collected will be given to local schools.

So what kind of style requests are the cosmetology students expecting to receive this year?

"During the Cuts for Kids promotion, Remington College students usually see classic, basic back-to-school looks being requested from parents and children," said Charles Woolbright, Remington College Cosmetology Department Chair, via email. "The rest of the year, however, we see a lot of different hairstyles depending on what's on trend. Lately a lot of people have been embracing their natural hair texture, with deep conditioning treatments and long layers."

Since 2009, Remington's Cleveland campus has provided more than 1,000 free haircuts through Cuts for Kids. More than 1,500 school supplies have been donated through the program.

The students receiving free haircuts aren't the only ones benefitting from the Cuts for Kids program; the cosmetology students gain valuable experience as well.

"During the Cuts for Kids promotion, students get the opportunity to complete many haircuts, and conquer their fear of shears and clipper cuts. The promotion allows the students to gain the practical experience they need working with clients," Woolbright said. "At the end of the service, both the students and clients are more than pleased with the outcome of the haircut. This gives both parties the boost needed to go on to the next chapter of their school careers."
