Style Spotlight: Meg Albright of Highlight Styling

Meg Albright - Cleveland fashion stylist

Meg Albright is a local fashionista who has turned her love of fashion into a business helping others find and refine their own style. Her company, Highlight Styling, helps clients organize their closets and better develop their wardrobes, as well as providing a sounding board for clients' style quesitons. Below, Albright answers our questions about her company, spring trends and her best style advice.

You began Highlight as a blog and now own a wardrobe styling company! What prompted you to make the transformation from blogger to professional stylist?

As most fashion stories begin, I have been interested in fashion since I was a little kid. In fourth grade, I was attempting to sketch outfits of what I thought would look good together, but seeing that I was not an artist and didn't know how to sew, I quickly got off that path! However, I realized that all the outfits I was drawing were actually things I had seen while shopping with my mom; I was simply just pairing them together. So I started looking into this concept more and realized styling can be a career. Fast forward to sixth grade (hilarious timeline, right?) - I started looking at fashion colleges so I could set my goal of where I wanted to go to school to train myself to be a stylist. As time went on and I got to high school, I realized I wanted to start really honing in on my passion but needed to do it in a cost- and time-effective way. With my mom's guidance and push from my entrepreneurial family, my blog was born.

In the time between fourth grade and high school, I had become someone my friends and family turned to for fashion advice, so I wanted to apply this to my blog. I wanted to show other people different ways they could pair their outfits and what styles I thought were on trend. After writing the blog for a while and pairing the outfits together, I realized that I prefer a hands-on style of work and thought that writing wasn't completely my thing. I wanted to get out there and physically help people create those outfits from their closets and feel good with what they had. So in my senior year of high school, the styling portion of Highlight took over!

I love the Trend Feed on your website. What trends are you recommending people start incorporating into their wardrobes this spring?

Thank you! This spring I have three favorites I think women should incorporate into their wardrobe:

1. Drusy Pendant Necklaces - They're a nice earthy accent to your outfit but can provide a simple pop of color. There are so many great shops on Etsy that sell them and helping local businesses is great, too!

2. Detailed Blouses - A flowy blouse with a little extra detail is a great addition to your spring wardrobe. Whether you're wearing it with a pair of jeans or dressing it up for work, it's versatile and always leaves you looking put together.

3. Fit and Flare Skirts - The girly look is definitely back this spring, and what's more fun than a fit and flare skirt? Find a few in a bold color or in a floral or striped pattern. Pair it with a blouse or cotton t-shirt and you'll be on trend this spring!

What is a common problem your clients have, and how do you solve it?

While it sounds simple, the most common problem my clients face is figuring out how to pair outfits together that best accentuate their bodies. I solve this problem by figuring out what style they like (i.e. boho, classic, trendy, laid back), identifying their body shape and what clothes they feel comfortable in, and then shopping their closet with them to pair these outfits together. My goal is to teach and empower them to show off their beauty, so I provide them with pictures of their outfits paired together for when I'm not around, as well as personal shopping services for when they need new items added to their closet.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is classic and girly with a little glam twist. I love flowy dresses, skirts, and tops so I pair those with a glam statement necklace or killer heels, depending on the day.

Where do you find inspiration for your style and that of your clients?

A lot of my style inspiration comes from what colors and shapes I'm personally gravitating towards in a given season. With the help of Pinterest, shopping the internet and local stores, and observing everyones street style, I'm able to broaden my concepts to fit my clients and expand on my original ideas.

What is the best piece of style advice you've ever received?

That's a great question! I'd say the best piece of advice I've ever received is to make sure an outfit is tailored to your shape. Whether that means you need to shop in the petite section or go to a tailor to lengthen that dress just a little bit more so it's proportionate to your body, that little tweak makes all the difference in highlighting what makes you, you!
